Tennis in the United States is played on three kinds of places: public park courts run by a city or county, member clubs and country clubs with their own pros and leagues, and commercial tennis centers that sell court time by the hour. Public courts are usually free and first come, first served, with a posted limit (often 60-90 minutes when others are waiting); busier cities run online reservation systems with a small fee and a permit for the season. Indoor courts are rented by the hour and booked days ahead in winter. Most facilities are hard courts; clay is common in the Southeast and at private clubs, and grass is rare. Lights extend play into the evening at many parks, sometimes with a coin or app-operated switch.

Hours are published for 7 days a week. The most common schedule is 7 amโ€“8 pm. New York is in New York, in the Northeast, where four distinct seasons shape local life: hot humid summers, snowy winters that can close businesses for a day, and a dense pattern of towns where walking, transit and street parking all matter. Getting around New York is easiest by car; street parking is metered in busy downtown areas, and most suburban businesses have their own lot. Ride-share apps such as Uber and Lyft operate across New York's larger cities, and public transit varies from extensive to minimal.

These courts near West 119th are in a beautiful park setting, and I really like the playing surface. However, a few courts have noticeable cracks and need renovation. Lighting can also be a bit spotty at night since some lamps are broken. Itโ€™s convenient that they have free restrooms, a drinking water station, and bike racks right there, but be aware there are no security cameras. Don't forget you need an NYC Parks permit or a $15/hour online ticket. City tennis permit which costs $100 (or $90 if you have a valid IDNYC card). Players with online reservations get priority on the courts. That said, if you visit on a weekday during off-peak hours, you shouldn't have any trouble finding a free spot. Despite the flaws, itโ€™s still a wonderful place to play. And I really wish they would allow 2-hour reservations as well. Overall, it's still a solid place for a match if you don't mind a few minor maintenance issues.

2 members of staff working at 11:30AM on Friday June 19th were extremely rude and yelled at me for asking a simple question. I have never met Parks staff as rude as these two individuals.

Oddest thing todayโ€” I arrived at 7:30 to sign up for a 10 am slot and was told they only do walk ups for the hour before. Thatโ€™s news to me so Iโ€™m not sure whatโ€™s going on here

Stunning location placed in Riverside park next to the cathedral bells. Staff can be really rude though, I think they enjoy the power trip of being able to tell people off for arriving a little late and that they could kick them off and ruin our day if they wanted to.

Absolutely ridiculous reservation system. You make reservations in person an hour before, and then the employees leave whenever they want to and itโ€™s a court free for all. This has happened to me multiple times โ€” I donโ€™t want to get in arguments over my reservation with people who didnโ€™t reserve when I paid $100 PER season for a pass.
